Alright Autism Family, one thing we know for sure is that no one really gets what we go through, but us.
The late nights researching solutions, the tough conversations at school meetings, and the overwhelming feeling that no one is listening—this is our reality. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to do this alone. I did it alone. But, I've figure out a way to get as much support and assistance for my children as possible. You can be the advocate your child needs, and I’m here to help you every step of the way.
One thing I realized as an Autism mom is that IEP meetings, trying to select schools, trying to find funding for your kids to receive the support they need, and even simply knowing what to say to help your child to bond with their teacher can all feel very intimidating. So intimidating that the caregivers of Autistic children are often left to the mercy of the schools and the administration because we feel so disempowered. Not anymore.
I created this entire Advocacy to help you fight because fighting has helped my boys to attend incredible private schools and receive financial support to do so, have the guidance they need when learning and taking tests, have better social experiences, and build solid relationships with their teachers.
Still unsure? Well let me ask you this...
Does This Sound Like You?
- You’re exhausted from having to fight for every little thing your child needs at school.
- You're frustrated from not really knowing what your child needs at school.
- You’ve sat through school meetings feeling confused, ignored, or out of your depth.
- You’re wondering if there’s more support out there—but you don’t even know where to start.
I’ve been in your shoes. I’ve felt the frustration, the overwhelm, and the fear of wondering if I was doing enough. But I’ve also experienced the power of knowing what to say, what to ask for, and how to secure what my child truly deserves. And now, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned with you.
Who am I, anyway?
I'm Genie Dawkins. I'm a public speaker, writer, and advocate for children on the Autism Spectrum.
I am also a mother of four children, who also all happen to be on the Autism Spectrum.
They are my Why.
And they are also my reasoning for considering us all Family. There are certain things that you and I can relate to that other parents and caregivers can't and many of those things can be quite frustrating without support. But, don't worry... here's my hand.
You have support now.
And if you already have support, well now you've got even more.
Let's talk about what's inside this toolkit.
Scripts to Secure Services
I created scripts for you to help you know exactly what to say to schools when you are requesting support and or resources. For some support, you have to be sure to mention key words in order to receive it. I make it super easy for you. Simply copy and paste. You can use all of the time you would've spent researching and trying out different things with your child, giving them more love...and maybe even taking the much needed break I know you need.
More about the scripts:
- The scripts remove uncertainty. They will guide you step-by-step in requesting or expanding services like therapy, classroom aides, and assistive technology.
- Learn how to follow up professionally after verbal conversations, so nothing slips through the cracks.
